CD REPLICATION / CD-R, DVD-R DUPLICATION

CD Replication (often called 'pressing' or 'molding') is the original and traditional method of manufacturing CDs. Raw materials enter a large CD molding machine and the basic CD is created first. The data or audio information is physically stamped onto the CD using stampers made from a glass master which is created from your source master. The CD is then finished off with protective layers and is ready for silk screen printing.

This method of manufacturing CDs requires that a minimum of 1000 units be pressed. Because of the amount of time and materials involved in setting up each replication run, it is not cost-efficient to produce less.

It generally takes 10 business days to create a finished product from your source master. This includes the making of the glass master, pressing the CDs, printing on the CD, printing of the insert materials and packaging. Rush services are available and it may be possible to have your CDs manufactured in 7, 5 or even 3 business days

CD-R/DVD-R Duplication (often called "duping" or "burning") is the digital method of creating CDs, rather than a traditional manufacturing process like CD Replication. CD-Rs begin just like replicated CDs. Raw materials enter a CD press and the base of the CD is formed. Then,  instead of stamping information onto the CD, an organic layer of dye is applied. The CD-R is then finished off with a reflective surface and protective layers, leaving a blank recordable CD.

CD-R duplication requires less setup time than CD Replication. Glass masters are not created from your master - so manufacturing can begin right away. For this reason, CD-R Duplication is perfect for short runs from 1 to 1000 units, or almost any amount if turn around time is critical.

Turn around time for CD-Rs varies widely. It depends on the size of your master ('MBs' for data or 'minutes' for audio), as well as the total amount of CD-Rs that you need. As a general rule, almost any amount of CD-Rs (up to 5,000) can be completed in 7 business days or less - for more complete information call your Customer Service Representative at WRS.

Ideal projects for CD-R duplication might include some of the following:

  • Full retail-ready packages (insert printing & packaging) up to 1000 pieces

  • Demo CDs with 1 color printing (black) from 1 to 1000

  • Frequent software updates for office personnel, field reps, customers, etc.

  • Same day - 1,2 or 3 day rush projects
